Plantar Fascitis is an inflammation of the fascia of the bottom of the foot. This can be a very painful condition and can be difficult to treat because it is constantly aggravated when walked upon. Ask anyone whom has ever had it and they will tell you how miserable it is. It is often mis-treated because treatment many times is just focused at the inflammed fascia itself and not the cause of the condition.
Plantar fascitis, many times, is caused by a fallen arch (over-pronation of the foot) therby stretching the fascia, irritating it, leading to inflammation (-itis). This also causes it to pull on the insertion @ the calcaneous which can lead to a heel spur (often in combination with tight gastroc msucles). It's also noteworthy that over-pronation will lead to a change in the biomechanics of the stance and gait which could cause knee pain, hip pain, leg pain and even low back pain. It has been estimated that this problem is the #1 cause of knee degeneration leading to knee surgery because it causes excess wear and tear on the knee (bet your orthopedic surgeon never told you that).
What can a chiropractor do?
Not all chiropractors are trained to treat this but at Freed Chiropractic we will evaluate the biomechanics of your gait (walk) and your stance. We can then address the overpronation (or other dysfunction), correct and stabilize it to eliminate your current discomforts along with reducing the likely hood of future problems.
We are conceerned with not only getting you out of any current discomfort you may be in but taking a proactive approach to your condition and fixing it before there is degeneration rather than a reactive approach and waiting for something to get worse before addressing it.
