October 16th is World Spine Day

October 16th is World Spine Day
Every year on October 16th people from around the world join together to raise awareness on World Spine Day as part of the Bone and Joint Action Week. The World Spine Day theme for 2016 is "Straighten up and Move". We want to highlight the importance of physical activities and improving your posture as part of spinal health and prevention of injury.

With back pain the largest single global cause of disability, World Spine Day will be raising awareness of occupational factors and how we can reduce the impact they have on our backs and necks. Heavy lifting, repetitive movement and sitting for long periods can all become painful over time; in fact back pain is one of the major causes of time off work, with workers sometimes out of action for weeks or months.
Your health is important to us! Come in to get your spine checked. We are offering FREE one time use, spinal checks.
Check out the tips below.

Back pack safety: Backpack buying tips

Backpack Safety: Backpack Buying Tips

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that backpack safety begins with making sure parents purchase the right backpack. Look for:

•A lightweight backpack that doesn’t add weight to what your child must carry. If it’s a choice between that cool leather backpack, and a more common canvas backpack, choose the canvas. It’s lighter, so better for backpack safety.

•Two broad shoulder straps with padding are better than narrow straps... which are more likely to dig trenches into a child’s shoulders. A backpack with one shoulder strap may look awesome, but isn’t good for backpack safety. Your child needs two straps to distribute the weight of the pack as evenly as possible.

•Padded backs are a feature of better quality backpacks and a must for backpack safety. Padding makes the backpack more comfortable, and also keep those sharp pencils, rulers, and book corners, for instance, from poking your child in the back.

•Waist belts are important for backpack safety, as they keep the weight of the backpack more evenly spread out, to prevent stress on any one part of the body.

•Lots of compartments are good for backpack safety, because these too, help spread the weight around, preventing injury and stress to the body.

A Study Of Over 20,000 Neck Adjustments Reveal...

A Study of over 20,000 Neck Adjustments Reveal...

Data was collected from patients after researchers set out to identify symptoms that could predict whether patients would feel "better" or "worse" immediately following neck adjustments. Patients in this study presented symptoms such as: reduced neck/shoulder/arm movement, neck pain/ shoulder pain/ arm pain/ headache, upper/mid-back pain.

Researchers determind that 95% of patients with the symptoms were immediately improved following a neck adjustment!

Pain is usually the first symptom to appear. Whether you suffering from headaches, shoulder, neck pain, or leg pain---complete healing takes time.

Tissues that do not fully heal and joints that do not move properly are prone to re-injury.

Why is pain shooting down from my back to my legs?

Why is pain shooting down from my back to my legs?

The most common reason the pain or numbness or tingling will be shooting down your leg from your back is that you are having a disc problem in your lower back. Disc problems such as, disc bulges, inflammation, disc herniation's, disc extrusions are all very painful. A disc problem can take awhile to heal. Good news is that whether you choose Chiropractic care or surgery, the healing process will take about the same time with possibly the same results. So instead of the extra pain, give chiropractic a try.

You can also have tight muscles that compress or entrap nerves. This can happen with your hip flexors or even your hamstrings. As muscles start to bunch up and the muscle fibers adhere together forming scar tissue it then starts to wrap up the nerve fibers and create additional compression on your nerves. A chiropractor can diagnose and help to relieve the entrapped nerves.

If you are having an episode of this, get an ice pack out of the freezer and call us. We will be able to diagnose your problem correctly.
Any back problem that is extending into your leg, is not going to go away over night. You will need regular and frequent care to feel better for the long term.

Do you or someone you know suffer from pulmonary disease?

Do you or someone you know suffer from pulmonary disease?

Asthma affects over 17 million Americans as well as COPD.
Often, during the warm months children and adults with a lung disease can have flare ups.

Pulmonary diseases cause many symptoms such as blockage of airways, shortness of breath, tightness in chest, wheezing, and a cough to name a few. Many individuals with this disease have resolved maintenance of the illness by using inhalers. However, Chiropractic care has been shown to help improve the condition with regular chiropractic treatments.

Chiropractic treatment involves the realignment of the spine and therefore the nerves. Chiropractic manipulation can eliminate obstruction during nerve impulse conduction to the lungs and airway. When adjusted, your body is restored to its natural state of alignment, nerves can then function as they should, allowing the lungs to function properly.

Chiropractic care can also benefit by fixing musculoskeletal alignment problems in the ribcage and spine. When this is done, the thoracic cavity is free to expland like it should.

There is a study performed by Graham and Pistolese. The study was performed on 81 asthmatic patients before the start of chiropractic care and two months after their care. The results of this study showed improvment in 90.1% of patients 60 days after chiropractic care. The patients also reported nearly 50% reduction of frequency of asthma attacks.

Life style changes like chiropractic care can be an asset in the lung disease treatment process.

Can your knee/leg/or foot pain be helped by your chiropractor?

Plantar Fascitis is an inflammation of the fascia of the bottom of the foot.  This can be a very painful condition and can be difficult to treat because it is constantly aggravated when walked upon.  Ask anyone whom has ever had it and they will tell you how miserable it is.  It is often mis-treated because treatment many times is just focused at the inflammed fascia itself and not the cause of the condition.

Plantar fascitis, many times, is caused by a fallen arch (over-pronation of the foot) therby stretching the fascia, irritating it, leading to inflammation (-itis).  This also causes it to pull on the insertion @ the calcaneous which can lead to a heel spur (often in combination with tight gastroc msucles).  It's also noteworthy that over-pronation will lead to a change in the biomechanics of the stance and gait which could cause knee pain, hip pain, leg pain and even low back pain.  It has been estimated that this problem is the #1 cause of knee degeneration leading to knee surgery because it causes excess wear and tear on the knee (bet your orthopedic surgeon never told you that).

What can a chiropractor do?

Not all chiropractors are trained to treat this but at Freed Chiropractic we will evaluate the biomechanics of your gait (walk) and your stance.  We can then address the overpronation (or other dysfunction), correct and stabilize it to eliminate your current discomforts along with reducing the likely hood of future problems.

We are conceerned with not only getting you out of any current discomfort you may be in but taking a proactive approach to your condition and fixing it before there is degeneration rather than a reactive approach and waiting for something to get worse before addressing it.
